Scent Work

Why APro Dogs?

Get to know us

I compete regularly in SWUK with my disabled French Bulldog Titan! I also compete regularly in Barn Hunt with my French Bulldog Penny and am a Barn Hunt International instructor!
Scent work for dogs is my biggest passion and it can benefit any dog of any breed, age and ability.

I commonly recommend scent work to my reactive dog clients as I find a combination of scent work and threshold training works the best!

Why Scent Work?

Scent work is arguably the most valuable form of mental enrichment for dogs of all types. Whether that is companion dogs or working dogs, EVERY dog enjoys and benefits from scent work! It is also said that 15 minutes of scent work is the equivalent to a 90-minute walk!

Many people use snuffle matts and the like for their dogs but many dogs will actually find these too easy and it is not as stimulating as functional scent work.

Once you know the basics, you can start utilizing scent work at home and out on walks as a form of enrichment for your dog.

What Scents Do You Train?

The scents I work with are Red Kong, Clove Oil, Gun Oil, Truffle Oil and Rats.

Dogs can be trained on a multitude of scents and there's no reason why your dog can't learn them all!

I find a good starting point is either Red Kong or rats but if there is a specific scent you want to train your dog on (for example, you want them to find your keys when you lose them or to be able to sniff out specific household items) we can start straight with these scents.

Do you do classes?

I am hoping to offer classes in the future for functional scent work but at this time I am fairly busy with Barn Hunt, dog training and everything else! If there does become a great demand for this it will be something I will look into.

What is Scent Work?

There are many different forms of scent work ranging from the "functional" scent work, similar to what police sniffer dogs do, to the scent work that taps into your dog's natural hunt/prey drive.

There are many different organisations in the UK which offer scent work classes and competitions. Such as Scent Work UK (SWUK), National Nosework Association (NNA), Nosework Games, UK Sniffer Dog, BarnHunt and more!

There are a lot of options to choose from and we can work on whatever your dog enjoys best!

"My dog has no prey drive/work ethic, will they be any good?"

You will be surprised at what the power of the nose can achieve!

Dogs of all breed, age, type, ability and drive level will be able to have a go at scent work.

If your dog is a particularly sniffy dog when out and about, they will most definitely enjoy scent work!

How does it work?

Scent work sessions are 1-2-1 and are perfect for you and your dog to quickly learn the basics.

They are also perfect for reactive dogs as no class environment is necessary!

Generally, I will come to you and we will train either at your home or a public location. I can arrange for you to come and work with me at a venue but these need to be arranged on request only and do incur a slightly higher charge for venue hire.

Venue sessions are best for when you are preparing for a competition or really want to test your dog's skills!
